Charitable Contributions Guidelines

All requests received by The M&T Charitable Foundation are reviewed by local Charitable Contributions Committees. 

Monthly meeting dates vary from region to region; please contact the appropriate region for the scheduled meetings and deadlines.

If your organization would like to be considered for a charitable contribution, please submit the following:

  1. A completed Charitable Contributions Application
  2. Board member list with affiliations
  3. Copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) federal tax exemption letter of determination
  4. A brief proposal (1-2 pages) that includes the following:
    a. Mission statement/purpose of your organization
    b. Detailed description of the need for funding
    c. Description of how the contribution will benefit the quality of life in your
        community
    d. The nature and sources of permanent funding
    e. Annual budget and/or project budget
    f.  How you will measure the impact of your program
  5. If the request is for $10,000 or more, please complete the Supplemental Questionnaire contained in the application
  6. If applying for funding in the Buffalo area, please follow the instructions for Definition of Sponsor for Submission of Buffalo Proposals contained in the application
  7. If applicable and applying for funding in Greater Baltimore, Greater Washington, or Chesapeake/Central Maryland, please complete the Volunteer Form contained in the application
  8. If applicable and applying for funding in the Rochester area, please complete The Logic Model contained in the application

FUNDING LIMITATIONS – In general, The M&T Charitable Foundation does not make grants to:

  • Individuals
  • Organizations which lack the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
  • Political organizations, candidates or lobbying efforts
  • Fraternal or veterans organizations
  • Sports teams
  • National or international organizations, unless their programs have significant local impact
  • Religious or sectarian organizations, except when they are conducting programs secular in nature and have wide public impact
