Focusing on ways to make a difference for the environment.Mother and son smiling

M&T is committed to being an environmentally conscious corporate citizen.  We focus on practical and tangible “green” actions and activities that make a measurable difference in the environment in ways that both involve and benefit our employees, customers and shareholders.

M&T Bank has formed a senior-level advisory committee to grow and sustain our environmental efforts.  This team of managers from business and operating units across the company evaluate green ideas to determine feasibility, cost and priority.  New initiatives are implemented by special project teams, either within departments such as Corporate Services or, in the case of broader efforts such as enhanced recycling, by employees across the bank.  For M&T, “being green” means making a measurable difference in the world around us.

Below is a sample of the changes and projects we’ve implemented to date:

  • We’ve installed higher efficiency equipment, which has reduced our electricity usage by 1.45% annually.  This amounts to a reduction of approximately 1,300,0001 pounds from our carbon footprint2
  • We’ve also educated employees on ways to be more energy efficient at the office
  • Recycled paper has become our standard copy paper, which is estimated to save 7,000 trees annually3
  • Double-sided printing has been standardized, which has reduced our annual paper consumption by 11 million sheets (which is the equivalent of saving 1,300 trees per year3)
  • Our sensitive document recycling program recycles 2.6 million pounds of paper into new paper and converts approximately 1.8 million pounds into an estimated 350,000 KWh of electricity4
  • We also provide employees with the opportunity to recycle non-sensitive documents such as newspapers, bottles and cans
  • Where it makes sense, we will be leveraging green building standards and materials in new constructions and renovations
  • We’ve partnered with established carpooling services throughout our footprint to help employees reduce their carbon footprints
  • A renewed focus on audio and videoconferencing tools encourages employees to reduce business travel and its associated impacts on the environment
  • All facilities have changed from bottled water to filtered water, cutting down on plastic waste and on the carbon that would be created by bottled water delivery trucks

1 M&T utilizes Climate Leaders (EPA industry-government partnership) greenhouse gas accounting principles
2 “Carbon footprint” is defined by dictionary.com as “a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide produced by a person, organization, or location at a given time.”
