How an M&T Business Debit Card Works.A business man using an M&T Business Debit Card

An M&T Business Debit Card is a safe, convenient way to pay for everyday business expenses.
When you use an M&T Business Debit Card, you’ll have convenient access to your business funds – so there's no need to write checks or fumble for change during a business purchase or make frequent trips to the ATM. This is because an M&T Business Debit Card can function in two ways: like a check to make purchases, or like an ATM card for cash withdrawals.

In addition, all M&T Business Debit Card feature a Visa® logo which enables you to use the card anywhere Visa® debit cards are accepted – at millions of places worldwide.

When you make a purchase with an M&T Business Debit Card, the cashier or the card reader will ask whether you want to use your card as “debit” or “credit.” Either way, the money comes from your M&T business checking account.*

Debit or Credit?

  • DEBIT – If you use the card as “debit,” you enter your personal identification number (PIN) to authorize the transaction and the payment is processed through a PIN network. You may also have the option at participating merchants to get cash back when you make a debit purchase, similar to accessing an ATM. Regardless, the money comes from your M&T business checking account.*
  • CREDIT – If you use the card as “credit,” you simply sign for your purchase (like a credit card) instead of entering your PIN, and the payment is processed through the Visa network. It is important to understand that when using the card as “credit” it does not actually draw money from a credit card line of credit, but rather the money comes from your M&T business checking account.*

With an M&T Business Debit Card, you can pay for everyday business purchases – no purchase is too small – including:

  • Office supplies
  • Client dinners
  • Business travel expenses
  • One-time and recurring invoices/bills
  • Internet/online purchases
  • Phone orders
  • and more!
