I actually got my start in sales at a very young age, around 10 years old, selling newspaper subscriptions door to door. There was a guy named Wayne who would pick all of us kids up in his old, beat-up van (yes, the kind you’d only expect to see in movies where they kidnap people). He created a simple incentive: if you hit a certain number of subscriptions, he’d take us to Burger King and let us order whatever we wanted. I grew up in a pretty tough financial situation, so that meant more than just a reward to me. I’d always get the Whopper value meal but instead of eating it there, I’d bring it home to share with my three brothers. Looking back, that experience didn’t just teach me how to sell - it taught me work ethic, motivation, and the value of providing for others.
